Historic Town Green

bulfinch church Lancaster's Town Green sits like an emerald in the center of town. It is surrounded by historic buildings.

Charles Bulfinch designed the First Church of Christ, Unitarian, better known as the Bulfinch Church, in 1816. A Paul Revere bell still chimes in the tower; an annual fair is held in the historic horse sheds behind the church.

Next is the Lancaster Public Library, built over a century ago, a gift of the Thayer family, as a memorial to the town's Civil War dead.
The building has undergone a multi-million dollar renovation and expansion.
 

school The Center School was built in 1903 and served for years as Lancaster High School.

It was used for many years as an elemenatry school facility, but with completion of teh new Mary Rowlandson School, it is unused and available for town use. It has been named the Prescott Building in honor of the town's founder. A committee to stufy future use of the building was being formed in the fall of 2002.

 

townhall Town Hall completes the circle of historic buildings around the Town Green. Town Hall has a handicapped-accessible entrance to the back and houses the town boards.

Built as a gift to the town by a member of the Thayer family in 1904, it is showing its age. Substantial renovations are planned in the near future.
